Les Simm

Les Simm is the Founder and Executive Director of the International Forum for Understanding. Based in Cambridge, the Forum promotes constructive dialogue and impactful solutions for urgent contemporary challenges.

Les works in the business sector, with governments, the UN, INGO’s and other entities in areas ranging from security risk management and business resilience to humanitarian operations and disaster relief. He has expertise in nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons disarmament, non-proliferation, arms control and verification, security sector reform and countering transnational organised crime.

Having trained as a psychiatric nurse in his early career, Les has long-term interest in mental health and wellbeing. He is a passionate supporter of the SDGs with a particular focus on project implementation and making a demonstrable and direct impact on people’s lives.

Les served for 30 years from 1975 to 2005 in the British Army: five years in the Royal Army Medical Corps and 25 years in the Intelligence Corps. His military career focused on Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency, Security Sector Reform, Post Conflict Reconstruction and Defence Diplomacy.

Since leaving the military, Les has worked for the UK Government, UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Afghanistan as Head of Counter Narcotics Intelligence and Law Enforcement, as Project Director for the UAE Critical National Infrastructure Authority (CNIA), as Brazil-based Operations Manager responsible for the South Cone of Latin America for a leading international consultancy company, and as an independent consultant to governments, NGO’s and businesses in a wide variety of sectors from retail, finance, and extractive industries to humanitarian operations and disaster relief.

He has carried out corporate investigations, due diligence, and anti-counterfeit operations, and has significant expertise in countering Transnational Organised Crime. He has also carried out executive security operations for world leaders, A-list artists, and business leaders. Some highlights of Les’ work since 2005 include: risk management for the Brazil World Cup 2014 and the Olympics 2016, international travel and business continuity support to companies during the H1NI pandemic, Mumbai and Jakarta bombings, Haiti earthquake (2010: in-country evacuation and stabilisation operations), and numerous development and disaster management operations.

Having served in British Embassy appointments across the globe including in Lebanon, Israel, Egypt, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Venezuela, Nepal and Sudan, Les speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese and Bulgarian. He holds the Queens Commendation for Valuable Service awarded for counter-terrorism operations.
